Since 2006, Lebanon had witnessed several wars and conflicts. The war of 2006 had a drastic impact on Lebanon’s economy, and particularly that of The South which had been directly damaged. Moreover, the Nahr El-Bared war left both the Palestinian and Lebanese communities devastated. PAWL took an active role in both crises to relief, at a first stage, then to work with the international community and donors on economic recovery in many areas in the South and North of Lebanon.
Project with OXFAM – Quebec in the South
Funded by OXFAM-Quebec, this project was launched in June 2007 and ended in June 2009 It was designed and is implemented in response to the losses the micro-enterprises had following the 2006 war. Such losses resulted in losing whole or part of their business premises, assets, and/or working capital. The project provided financial aid for the full recovery of a number of enterprises, in Ein El-Helweh – Saida and Burj El-Shamaly & Gatherings – Tyre, that were directly or indirectly damaged from the 2006 war. Target number of beneficiaries will exceeded 400 enterprises working in different sectors and serving both the Palestinian and Lebanese markets. Those enterprises provided 520 job opportunities for family income earners.
Project with Welfare Association in Nahr El-Bared
Funded by Welfare Association, this project was the first Economic Recovery project to be launched and implemented in Nahr El-Bared. A short term project that was done in a record time, from October 2007 to December 2007, it supported 30 micro-entrepreneurs to re-establish their activities in Nahr El-Bared camp and regain their sustainable income. These financed enterprises provided jobs for 50 additional families income earners in the camp. Entrepreneurs were financially aided to rehabilitate their business premises, and recover their assets and/or products.
Project with Canada Fund in Nahr El-Bared
Funded by Canada Fund, through the Canadian Embassy, and under the context of Economic Recovery in Nahr El-Bared camp, this project supported the healthy return of a number of families to Nahr El-Bared, by providing their income earners financial means to restart their business activities. This project started on December 2007 and ended in March 2008, and provided financial aid for the recovery of 27 micro-enterprises in Nahr El-Bared Camp that provided 48 additional job opportunities for family income earners in the camp.
Project with OXFAM – Quebec in Nahr El-Bared
As in the South of Lebanon, OXFAM-Quebec partnered with PAWL and responded to the need for an urgent Economic Recovery in Nahr El-Bared camp. The project started in December 2007 and will ended in December 2008 The total of 40 entrepreneurs were financed to re-launch their business activities. These enterprises provided 69 job opportunities for family income earners in the camp.
Project with OXFAM – GB in Nahr El-Bared
Launched in June 2008, this project aimed at financially supporting 107 NBC entrepreneurs (women & Youth) to re-establish their business activities. Financing of potential enterprises was preceded by a “Coping mechanism survey” that helped the project detect how the NBC people are financially coping with their needs. It also helped specifying criteria for the most vulnerable people to be addressed by the project.
